Birgit Emich has been Professor of Early Modern History at Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main since 2017. From 2010 to 2016, she held the chair for this epoch at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. She studied History and Political Science at the University of Freiburg and has been working on Rome and the papacy as a paradigm of the early modern period since her doctorate. Her main publications include Bürokratie und Nepotismus unter Paul V. (1605–1621), 2001. Territoriale Integration in der Frühen Neuzeit. Ferrara und der Kirchenstaat, 2005 (awarded the Academy Prize of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences 2005). Ed. with Gabriela Signori: Kriegs/Bilder in Mittelalter und Früher Neuzeit, 2009.
