Women Writers under Glass: Glass Scenographies as Construction Sites of Female and Artistic Subjectivity
Szilvia Gellai
A media studies approach to glass spaces and the subjects who appear in them already requires a dual focus in the case of the built environment. This focus allows grasping the boundaries and tensions between interior and exterior worlds, visual and tactile perception, and between movement and immobilization. However, as soon as literature, on the one hand, and gender, on the other, come into play, the areas of tension that need to be focused on multiply. Above all, the changeable materiality of glass is joined by the rich poetic, aesthetic, and technical potential of its tropes. In this talk, Szilvia Gellai offers insights into glass scenographies created by female authors of the 20th century, which address the problem of female subjectivity and artistic sovereignty, as well as the art of living.
This talk marks the end of Szilvia Gellai‘s fellowship in the LOEWE cluster “Architectures of Order”. She was a visiting fellow from January to March 2021.
The talk will be held virtually and in German.
