Computer & creativity in the computational field in architecture: from AI research dilemmas to a new design rationality for the built environment

Oliver Tessmann und Nadja Gaudillière

Vortrag im Rahmen des Symposiums Deep City (24.-26.03.2021)

Paper session 05: Machine Learning and AI as New Forms of Design Rationality

The research proposes an exploration of the two parallel timelines of AI and computational architecture and their intertwining – analyzing debates and writings to grasp the theoretical issues at play, but also specific examples of programs, tools and projects in order to take the realities of practice into account. Furthermore, in light of the identification of two opposite tendencies to heuristic programming and design rationality, the paper interrogates the contemporary understanding of the role of the computer in the production of the built environment. In particular, the research proposes a description of creativity as entailing the resort to tacit knowledge (Polanyi 1966), and investigates the consequences of this for the automation of decision-making at the center of both AI and computational architecture research.
